Men’s basketball team receives awards at banquet

The Iowa State men’s basketball team held its annual postseason banquet Saturday night and junior guard Jake Sullivan took the night’s highest honor.
Sullivan, Iowa State’s leading scorer and the sixth-leading scorer in the Big 12 at 17 points per game, received the Ralph A. Olsen Most Valuable Player Award, according to an ISU media relations press release.
Sullivan, who also earned a third-team all-Big 12 Conference selection, picked up the ISU free-throw and three-point awards as well. His 87.3 percent from the charity stripe was good enough for second in the Big 12.
Junior big-man Jackson Vroman received the outstanding rebounder and outstanding defensive awards, according to the release. Vroman led the Cyclones with a 9.4 rebound average, 55 percent field goal percentage and 12 double-doubles. He was named to the Big 12 All-Newcomer team and was an honorable mention all-Big 12 pick.
Marcus Jefferson, a junior guard/forward, received the most improved player award, according to the release. As Iowa State’s main sixth man, Jefferson was a key player down the stretch averaging just over 12 points in Iowa State’s last seven games.
Junior point guard Tim Barnes received the most assists award at the banquet as he led the team with 154 assists on the season, fourth in the Big 12. He drained 57 three-pointers on the year, coming on strong late making 42 of them in the last 16 games.
Iowa State’s two seniors, forwards Omar Bynum and Clint Varley, received the Louis Menze Award. Varley, who began his career as a walk-on and later earned a scholarship, also picked up the Pete Taylor Mr. Hustle award, according to the release.
Freshman walk-on John Neal received the Brian Pearson inspiration award and sophomore Jared Homan and freshman Adam Haluska joined Sullivan in receiving the ISU academic award.
