LETTER: Ames needs places for under-21 crowd

Right now, it’s 1:48 a.m. on a Saturday night. But where have I been? I’ve been out looking for something to do after a week of tests and lectures that make me want to get out and do something fun. But there’s a slight problem. As I walk down Welch Avenue, one thing becomes increasingly clear. I can’t do anything. Everywhere I turn I see “Must be over 21 after 7 p.m.” or “No one under 21 admitted.” So about all I can do on Welch on a Saturday night is talk to the hot dog man. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not suggesting that Ames Iowa should allow 18 year olds to drink, rather I’m suggesting we need more places where people under 18 can socialize. There’s always the kegger around the block, but who wants to risk an MIP or feeling like crap the next day?

What I think Ames needs is an 18 and over dance club. This would provide a much needed social atmosphere for those of us who can’t go to the bars. If you think about it, probably half of the undergraduate population is under 21. So that’s around at least 12,000 people who can’t get into the bars and have to look for other things to do. Not only would a dance club provide a place to socialize, it also might put a little groove into Iowa State.
