Some see controversy in decision to keep GSB finance director on board
April 15, 2003
Tempers are flaring within the Government of the Student Body over Mike Banasiak and Ben Albright’s decision to keep Director of Finance David Boike in the position for another year.
Several members of GSB, including Banasiak, Boike, off-campus senator Dan Kline, off-campus senator William Rock and Towers Residence Association senator Tony Luken, said outgoing president T.J. Schneider is unhappy with Boike.
“If I had a dime for every time T.J. threatened Boike’s job, I would be better off than I am now,” said Kline, finance committee member.
Boike said he and Schneider have disagreed on many things during the past year.
“It’s not T.J.’s presidency, it’s Mike’s, and Mike gets to appoint the candidate he feels most qualified — end of story,” Boike said. “I’m glad T.J.’s leaving and I’m looking forward to a fresh start.”
Schneider said he is not upset with Boike, and it is great if Banasiak thinks Boike is the most qualified candidate for director of finance.
“It’s office gossip,” Schneider said.
Boike and Banasiak declined to elaborate on the controversy surrounding Boike’s appointment.
“We took into account what happened this year, but we believe we can make this coming year better than the last and learn from mistakes in the past,” Banasiak said. “It’s unfortunate Ben [Albright] and I were thrown into this situation unfairly. However, I think we were able to look past controversy to the future to make a great cabinet.”
Kline said he applauds Banasiak and Albright’s decision to appoint Boike and said it is a step in the right direction.
“Thus far, the new administration looks to operate differently,” he said. “By Mike appointing Dave, it is a great testament to his desire to do what’s best for students.”
Banasiak said he and Albright decided to choose Boike because he was the most qualified for the job and because he had the experience they were looking for.
“Boike had past experiences and great ideas,” Banasiak said. “We’ve got a lot of good people, new faces and great ideas. I’m excited about the potential of our cabinet.”
Banasiak said he thinks the senate will respect their decisions and realize they have picked the best qualified applicants for the job.
Boike said his past experience makes him qualified for the job. He also said he doesn’t see any reason for the senate to overturn the order.
Luken, speaker of the senate, said the position of the finance director has been recognized by Ethos magazine as fourth of the top five most influential students on campus, because as finance director, Boike is the officer that deals with the student fee money GSB collects. For this year, GSB received $1.5 million in revenue, which Boike managed and helped to allocate with recommendations made to the senate over how GSB should spend its money.
According to GSB bylaws, the position of finance director is appointed by the president and approved by the senate. The senate will be decided upon at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Campanile Room of the Memorial Union.
