LETTER: Walkers, bicyclists must share sidewalk
April 15, 2003
It’s that time of year again when walkers, bicyclists, skaters and skate-boarders are all out “loose” on the sidewalks, multi-use and bicycle trails. Spring has sprung!
When you are on your bicycle and passing walkers, it is so nice to hear, “I’ll be on your left” or “on your right.”
It can be spoken in a normal voice and causes the walkers to move to the right or left of the sidewalk to let you through. A bell is not as clear as the verbal cue!
Remember that walkers and bicyclists always have the “right of way,” especially at crosswalks. Give them a brake, so to speak! Always stop and look before proceeding through a red light. That red light doesn’t mean “cruise on through.” Give a cyclist enough of the road for both of you to be safe. Legally, they are to have an entire lane.
Let’s share the walkways, trails and roads and keep them safe.
