EDITORIAL: Will the new GSB please do something?

Editorial Board

This week, students witnessed a new set of bodies flow into our Government of the Student Body. Well, some of us witnessed it, anyhow. Odds are, as with many things GSB does, a majority of ISU students didn’t notice or care that dozens of newcomers took the seats that are intended to provide voices to students, to give some power back to the student body of a university witnessing huge tuition increases and dramatic changes.

Amid the controversy swirling around former GSB President T.J. Schneider (and whether he truly did make unethical requests for money) and Finance Director Dave Boike (and whether he truly did prove incompetent during his term as finance director this year), we have to at least be happy that we’re ushering in a lot of new senators (as the senate this year truly did … well, nothing).

The inauguration of the senate and seating of the cabinet brought in fresh faces to every spot on GSB except for one, with a sprinkle of GSB veterans gracing the organization for at least one more year.

Actually, of the 37 senate seats, 27 of them have been filled by newcomers to the senate.

This should bode well for the senate, but let’s not forget that this year’s senate was largely newcomers as well. This apathetic bunch brought nothing to the table, and its accomplishments of the year include … well, giving up their seats to those that may actually do something.

Mike Banasiak, the new GSB president, has armed himself with a strong cabinet as well — putting that whole Boike scandal aside, anyhow. Vicky Lio, who ran for GSB vice president with Shawn Faurote, is Banasiak’s director of student awareness. This is an excellent move, as Vicky was one of the strongest candidates in this year’s election.

Lio will use her position on GSB to bring changes to the campus. With any luck, those around her will follow her example and bring some positive changes to campus as well.

We just want the new GSB senate and cabinet to accomplish something with the time they are allotted in these positions of power. Get in touch with your constituents. Find out what needs to be done on this campus, then accomplish it. Give the student body something more substantial than last semester’s joke of a bill “In English Please,” which did nothing more than jab at those whose native tongue was not English. Do more than bicker about dress codes and baseball caps — be professionals first, then focus on looking like professionals.

To the outgoing GSB senators … why did you waste our time? Why did you waste your time? Thanks for nothing. We hope your replacements forget the example you’ve set.
