LETTER: Daily insert filled with propaganda
April 22, 2003
In the Daily’s advertising supplement “The Silent Epidemic,” an article disagreed with the fact that birth control is “safer than aspirin” and then gave a list of problems that can be encountered. According to WebMD.com, the side effects of aspirin include:
* an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives);
* black, bloody or tarry stools;
* nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain;
* uncontrolled fever;
* blood in your urine or vomit;
* decreased hearing or ringing in the ears;
* seizures; or
* dizziness, confusion or hallucinations.
These effects are just as dangerous as anything the “humanlife” organization listed.
I dread getting this insert in the Daily every semester. It is filled with propaganda and half-facts. Even the word “pro-abortionist” is ridiculous.
It is pro-choice and I am pro-women, and pro-women making their own decisions about their body. I would support a friend’s decision to maintain a pregnancy as well as to end it. I am not pro-abortion, I am pro-choice. On the other hand, the other side is not pro-life, they are anti-choice. If we are going to get accurate on the issue, we should use these terms.
It is interesting that the insert links abortion and breast cancer. This issue has been disproven so many times. WebMD.com is not affiliated with politics, yet cites a large study where the abortion/ breast cancer link was proven to not exist. Plus, if there were over 1 million couples waiting to adopt, why are there so many children, especially minorities, in foster care and orphanages? Do these couples only want healthy white babies?
