‘Voice of the Cyclones’ falls silent

Pete Taylor, known as the “voice of the Cyclones” for ISU football and men’s basketball, died today at 12:30 p.m. He was 57.

Taylor had done play-by-play for the Cyclone Radio Network for 32 years.

The cause of death was not immediately known. Taylor was taken to an Iowa City hospital Tuesday, university spokesman Tom Kroeschell said.

“There’s an awful lot of shock and sorrow in our Cyclone family,” ISU athletics director Bruce Van De Velde said. “It’s a very sad day for all of us. Pete will be greatly missed by the Cyclone family and all who knew him. Our prayers and condolences go out to Pete’s family and his wife Judy.”

Iowa State will observe a moment of silence before tonight’s men’s basketball game against Missouri.

Taylor was an associate athletic director at Iowa State for the last seven years and often spoke at Cyclone Club events. He was the sports director at KCCI-TV in Des Moines for 22 years and was sportscaster of the year in Iowa four times.

Taylor is survived by his wife. He had two grown children, Jill and David.
