Softball team 2-1 in tournament
March 11, 2003
With two wins and one loss at the Tulsa, Okla., tournament this past weekend, the ISU softball team’s record moved to 9-9 on the season.
Due to cold temperatures, Iowa State only got in three games before the tournament was called. The Cyclones defeated Bradley 3-0 and Creighton 1-0 on Friday, which put the team on a six-game winning streak.
The streak was broken when Iowa State was defeated 3-2 by Portland State on Saturday. Tulsa and Louisiana-Monroe were the two games that were canceled.
Freshman pitcher Kristen Karanzias took the mound against Bradley. She had six strikeouts and allowed five hits over the 6 2/3 innings she pitched.
Senior pitcher Erica Martinez came in to relieve Karanzias and struck out the final batter for her second save.
Iowa State finally put runs on the board in the third inning when hits from freshman Cary Akins and junior Julia Lindsey came with runners on base.
In the fourth inning, sophomore Kim Rodgers hit a single to center field. After stealing second and third base, Rodgers scored after senior Katie Ruby reached first base on a field error by Bradley’s third baseman.
The game against Creighton was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning when senior Adi Blackmon hit a single.
She immediately advanced to second base due to a throwing error from the pitcher. Blackmon finally scored the first run for Iowa State on a Creighton error.
Of the four hits during the game, Blackmon owned two of them. The other two came from Lindsey and sophomore Diana Reuter.
Martinez pitched for Iowa State against Creighton and allowed just two hits for the whole game.
“We played just OK,” head coach Ruth Crowe said. “It wasn’t outstanding but not that bad either.”
On the first day of tournament play, Iowa State’s defense did not allow any runs scored.
“This was a combination of good defense and pitching,” Crowe said.
The Cyclones’ winning streak came to a halt when they were defeated by Portland State on Saturday evening. Iowa State scored its two runs in the third inning when Blackmon and Akins scored on errors made by Portland State.
The Cyclones had the chance to tie the game in the seventh inning. But sophomore Heather McLatchie was thrown out at home after a double from Lindsey to end the game.
“It was freezing cold that night,” Crowe said. “And I think we let it affect us. We had some errors on the field that could have been due to the cold weather and we just were kind of flat.”
During spring break, the Cyclones will travel to Corpus Christi, Texas, to compete in the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball tournament on March 14-16.
The team will then head to San Antonio, San Marcos, and Austin, Texas, before returning home.
