LETTER: Students in Helser should be fined
March 13, 2003
Kudos to the Daily staff taking the right stance on this issue. My last year as an RA was made a trying one as I had to deal with one of the worst vandalism problems for a floor on campus. We had hundreds of dollars of damage done by our own residents in a matter of a few months. Broken hallway window screens, broken fire alarm equipment, doors vandalized, unnecessary messes made in the den, hallways, kitchenette and bathroom that drew cleanup charges, and more.
The sad thing was that people knew who did the damage but were too cowardly to come forth with who it was most of the time or they didn’t care. Instead of an individual paying for his/her damages, the floor was charged and our recreational money was being used on stupid and childish vandalism acts instead of floor activities.
I feel this petty $5 fine will open some eyes and hopefully make residents more aware that they should take more pride in the place they live in.
Would they do the things they have done if it were their parents’ home?
If you don’t agree with the fine, then maybe you should take some action to see that your fellow neighbors don’t repeat their immature behavior and respect the place you and others have to live in everyday.
