LETTER: Oscar High Note overly negative

Usually I enjoy reading music and film reviews in the Daily’s High Note. It is interesting to hear somebody else’s point of view, especially a college age student or even a critic without the last name of Ebert. However, I didn’t enjoy seeing every motion picture produced within the last 12 months shot down with no parachute in the March 13 High Note edition.

To the Daily’s staff writers Ryan Curell and Tim Kearns: You must have relied on a thesaurus to find so many ways to insult each and every nomination. After reading both articles I had no desire to see any movie. There was a sentence of encouragement toward the movie “Adaptation,” but even that one glimmer of optimism was lost amidst the criticism.

Is there no way to appreciate the film industry for what it is? Is there absolutely nothing good about the films created in 2002? How about the comedies like “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” that take our minds off of nuclear disputes and war to amuse us for 95 minutes?

Or what about dramas like “Catch Me If You Can” and “About Schmidt” that give us an appreciation for things that usually go unnoticed?

Every nomination was belittled by the staff writers without any recommendations for a good film to see.

Find a movie that has, in the least, a sliver of potential. Before completely stomping all the grapes of visual media to wine, look for the ripe ones in the bunch. Otherwise, it will leave a sour taste in the mouths of your readers.
