LETTER: Hussein’s tyranny must be removed

There is one topic on people’s minds these days. You hear it on the sidewalks, in the caf‚s and restaurants of Ames and in the seats next to you in class. The topic is the war in Iraq.

The one point that can be agreed on in this war is that Saddam Hussein is an evil tyrant.

No one likes Saddam. He is a murderer, a despot and a thug. Saddam’s “going to bed routine” has been reported as this: watching “The Godfather” (he fashions himself as a Mafia Don) or the videos that are made of the people tortured and killed by his regime.

This is sick behavior. This man is a danger to the world.

The world has tried to do something about this man for 12 years. A dozen U.N. resolutions have been passed ordering him to disarm. Resolution 1441 was the last straw of diplomacy. He refused to submit to world authority and then, like in Munich, Old Europe quivered. It is up to the United States and Great Britain, and a coalition of the willing to do what the United Nations could not do.

These people are not the Iraqi people who have to follow Saddam or be killed. They see the danger and want to do something about it.

This is not a unilateral war, but the United States is taking up the burden of liberating the Iraqi people from Saddam, for which they are grateful.

Americans may die, but they die for the freedom of a people, which is a cause everyone should support.

If you cannot support this war, then think about the previous 12 years. If containment and diplomacy did not remove this beast, why do you think it would happen now?

You can’t seriously think that Saddam is good for Iraq or the world. If you do, my letter cannot help you.
