Women’s golf sets records for team

Records fell last weekend as the ISU women’s golf team competed at the Mountain View Collegiate tournament in Tucson, Ariz.

The Cyclones were the top finisher among NCAA competitors at the tournament, with a team score of 892 strokes over 54 holes. They finished second overall to International Pacific College, an Australian school, which won the event with 890 strokes.

The score of 892 blew away Iowa State’s previous record of 906 for a 54-hole tournament, set in 1998. During the second 18 holes of the tournament, the Cyclones notched a total of 291 strokes, also a record.

“The playing conditions were perfect,” head coach Julie Manning said. “It wasn’t [a] particularly easy [course]. We just had our A-game.”

Manning said the temperature for the tournament was in the mid to high 70s with little to no wind.

“I think all conditions were a green light,” Manning said. “I would have been surprised if we didn’t play well.”

She said that the team had taken advantage of Spring Break to relax and practice. Before the tournament, the golfers met with former ISU standout and current LPGA tour member Beth Bader.

“I can’t help but think that was particularly inspiring for our players,” Manning said.

Among the 12 teams at the tournament were fellow Big 12 schools Kansas State and Colorado and in-state rival Iowa. Kansas State finished in third place with 894 strokes.

Iowa and Colorado both had 917 strokes, finishing in a three-way tie for fifth place with Boise State.

The tournament featured several lead changes. International Pacific grabbed the early lead, but Kansas State charged to the front after 36 holes, needing only 290 strokes to complete the second 18 holes.

International Pacific had fallen to third place at that point, also trailing Iowa State, but used a strong final round to capture the tournament title.

Iowa State’s top individual competitor at the meet was sophomore Louise Kenney, a native of Scotland. Kenney’s tournament score of 218 was her personal best and was also a new Iowa State individual record for a 54-hole tournament. She finished one stroke behind meet medalist Christine Boucher of Kansas State.

Senior Laura Wells, who is also from Scotland, turned in Iowa State’s next best performance. Her 225 strokes earned her 15th place overall.

Senior Sarah Gilbert followed Wells, tying for 17th with 227 strokes. Juniors Cindy Whitmore and Leanne Owens finished in a tie for 29th place with 230 strokes.

Manning said that she has seen marked improvement from her team already this year and expects even more.

“They won’t be denied,” she said. “They may not be the most experienced, but they have more guts than any team I’ve ever coached.”
