LETTER: Strike on Iraq about power, not evil
March 24, 2003
The military strike against Iraq is no doubt affecting everybody. We can only hope that the war campaign will be swift and conclusive and there will be minimal casualties, military and civilians, on both sides of the conflict. Personally, I think this war once again underlines the reality of life: There is no right or wrong, there is no good or evil. What exists, however, is power.
Heck yes, I want power. With power, I can silence criticism, buy approval of friends and eliminate anyone who stands in my way. Great power gives me the ability to do anything I want, at the expense of you, who have little power. To borrow a quote from the movie “Matilda”: “I’m big, you’re small. I’m smart, you’re dumb. I’m right, you’re wrong, and there’s nothing you can do about it.” That is the reality of life.
Remember the phrase “weapons of mass destruction” that was used ad nauseum to characterize the Iraqi regime? I have a feeling that we won’t be hearing that phrase anymore, because the evidence to date tells otherwise. However, tune in to CNN if you want to see what “weapons of mass destruction” really are.
