LETTER: Knight’s denial of salary respectable
March 12, 2003
Everyone in this country should stand up and applaud Bobby Knight for what he did Monday.
He told Texas Tech to keep all of his $250,000 salary because he felt he did a poor job of coaching this year after his team went 16-11 (6-10 Big 12). If ISU’s coaches went by this standard, the university could have saved over $2 million in the football, men’s and women’s basketball, and wrestling programs, which all submitted mediocre to poor performances this year.
But then the question remains, why stop at athletics when so many professors submit below-par performances throughout the year? (I’m looking in your direction, chemistry department.) I’m sure the university could do a lot of things with a couple million dollars extra — maybe relax the tuition increase.
But, even if no one at this university does the same, Bobby Knight should still be respected and admired for what he did. He is, indeed, a good person, despite what some may believe.
