GSB diversity director Batsa turns in resignation
February 4, 2003
Government of the Student Body Director for Diversity Myron Batsa resigned Monday morning due to personal conflicts.
The position of GSB Director for Diversity was created by former GSB President Andy Tofilon and was first filled on the cabinet of current President T.J. Schneider last April. The position is intended to address the increasing need for diversity on the ISU campus.
Batsa said he needs time to focus on his future career path. He recently changed his major from political science and pre-architecture to public relations.
“I need to make sure I’m making the right life choices,” Batsa said. “I have other obligations I need to attend to.”
Schneider said he believes Batsa is making the right choice for his future. “Extracurricular means extra,” he said. “Being a student comes first.”
Schneider said GSB is seeking to fill the position for the remainder of the year. GSB will be accepting applications and looking internally for someone to fulfill the cabinet opening.
“I made the position what it is,” Batsa said. “I hope whomever takes the position will soar and accomplish what they want to accomplish.”
The focus of the diversity position is the education and promotion of diversity, Batsa said.
“Diversity is a diverse issue,” he said. “[Students] hear about [diversity] but can’t come to a conclusion as to what it is.”
Since his appointment in April, Batsa, as the first person to hold the position, has created a model for future diversity directors to follow.
When students thought diversity issues were not being addressed correctly, they would go to Batsa and he would identify, analyze and find solutions to those issues, he said. “[The new director] can go beyond that or stop there,” Batsa said.
Batsa said he believes he has set a standard for the director to be serious and passionate for a cause, in addition to working with diversity issues on campus.
He took the position and accomplished the goals laid out in the beginning, Schneider said.
Batsa was a key player in the organization of the first Friday Conversation on Diversity with President Gregory Geoffroy, which was held Jan. 24.
