LETTER: Hussein not capable of U.S. assault
February 18, 2003
This letter in in response to Nathan Borst’s Feb. 13 commentary “Peacenik endeavors support Hussein’s regime.” I am in utter outrage that Borst would even suggest that peace groups are anti-American.
First off, what is more American than being able to stand up for my beliefs? By surrendering that right, I believe the United States will only compromise everything it has striven for. I am by no means a fan of that evil man in Iraq. In my opinion, though, this attack on Iraq is not justified.
In addition, many believe in Iraq’s willingness to launch an attack on the United States. I don’t believe Hussein is capable of this feat, though, as this country has been monitored for quite some time now.
Now, as far as liberals only supporting evil dictators, Borst couldn’t be further from the truth. Why isn’t our “Republican” government helping the democratically elected Chavez in Venezuela? Who helped bring Saddam to power? What about training bin Laden? And Pinochet? The list only goes on.
Our so-called collective interests have lead to death and hatred in this world. In an ever-so-globalized society, why not look to global interests? I say the United States should follow the path of the United Nations, a global organization, and exhaust non-violent opportunities to disarm Iraq, rather than single-handedly take on a task which may possibly lead to a third destructive global war.
