The ISU swimming and diving team finished fifth at last week’s Big 12 Championships in Austin, Texas, as it broke six school records.

Three ISU swimmers and three ISU relay teams also achieved consideration times for the NCAA Championships, which begin March 21.

“Everybody did really well once we got rolling,” said Sam Dyshaw, who earned NCAA consideration in three events. “It was a great team effort.”

Dyshaw broke a school record in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 23.01. Her times in the 100-meter butterfly and 100-meter freestyle also qualified for consideration.

“I’ve never gotten consideration times before and to be able to do that in three events feels good,” Dyshaw said.

Head coach Duane Sorenson is optimistic about Dyshaw’s chances. The NCAA will decide which times are good enough to advance on March 7. “She has a pretty good shot,” Sorenson said.

Sorenson also got a strong performance from Petra Plaminkova. The junior put up the highest finish at the meet as she took second place in the 200-meter breaststroke. She is up for NCAA consideration in the 200 breaststroke and the 400-meter individual medley.

“I thought we did a good job.” Plaminkova said. “Everyone put forward 100-percent effort and it was a real fun week.”

It is uncertain as to if Plaminkova’s times will be good enough to earn her a spot in the NCAA Championships.

“Petra will be close in the 400-individual medley and the 200 breaststroke,” Sorenson said.

Lara Skoog’s school record-breaking performance in the 1,650 freestyle also landed her on the list of Iowa Staters under consideration for the NCAA Championships. Susanne Notbohm also set a school record in the 200 meter freestyle with a time of 1:50.03.

Plaminkova teamed up with Notbohm, Rena Kelinson and Kristen Vanek to break another school record in the 800-meter freestyle team placing third in the competition. Kelinson and Dyshaw combined with Brita Benson and Jenny Lindberg to place third in the 200-meter freestyle.

Both relay foursomes, as well as Iowa State’s 400-meter freestyle team, are under NCAA consideration.

The NCAA must wait for several other conferences to have their championships before the tournament can be put together.

Hillary Nichols also stepped up for Iowa State as she set a school record in platform diving with a score of 347.20. Nichols and the rest of the ISU divers will go to the NCAA Zone V Diving Championships on March 14-15 at the University of Texas to try to qualify for the NCAA competition.
