Swimming and diving team nearly sweeps Nebraska

Iowa State’s swimming and diving team neared a perfect sweep in defeating Nebraska 163-126 on Saturday at Beyer Hall Pool.

The meet marked the last home appearance for seniors Rena Kelinson, Carmella Nogar and Kristen Vanek.

Kelinson and Nogar were both individual winners, as Iowa State won all 12 individual events, both relays, and one of two diving events. Vanek and Kelinson were members of victorious relay teams.

Vanek said sweeping the individual events was not expected.

“It wasn’t really one of our goals,” Vanek said.

“Nebraska has been building their program. They have a lot of good swimmers.”

Nogar’s two wins included a personal best 57.20 in the 100 butterfly and a 2:05.16 in the 200 butterfly. Kelinson won the 50 freestyle (24.07) and took second in the 100 freestyle behind Cyclone teammate Jenny Lindberg, whose winning time was 52.69.

Junior Petra Plaminkova also had a good meet. She won the 200 breaststroke in 2:19.10, finishing more than five seconds ahead of second-place teammate Kim Chrun and more than eight seconds ahead of the nearest Nebraska swimmer. Plaminkova also recorded a strong win in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05.52, pulling away in the second half of the race.

Iowa State’s divers were led by freshman Hillary Nichols. Nichols won the one-meter diving competition with a score of 250.05. She also placed third in the three-meter diving competition, the only event won by Nebraska.

Junior Lara Skoog captured the long-distance events for Iowa State, winning the 1,650 freestyle (17:18.98) and the 500 freestyle (5:10.06).

She was happy just to have a chance to swim the 1,650 freestyle, noting that “we don’t usually swim the mile at dual meets. [Head coach Duane Sorenson] wanted to make sure I got lots of mileage in.”

In the 500 freestyle, Skoog edged Vanek by less than a second.

“My time wasn’t exactly where I wanted it to be, but after the mile, I was happy,” Skoog said. “I just wanted to make sure we got the win.”

Iowa State’s other individual winners were Sam Dyshaw in the 200 freestyle (1:54.71), Kim Schmugge in the 100 backstroke (58.31), Jamie Wieben in the 200 backstroke (2:07.20) and Susanne Notbohm in the 200 individual medley (2:06.49).

Schmugge, Wieben, Vanek and Nogar comprised Iowa State’s winning 200-freestyle relay team, which finished in a time of 1:36.09. In the 200-medley relay, Schmugge, Plaminkova, Notbohm and Kelinson were victorious in a time of 1:47.84.
