As an atheist heterosexual, I am very unsettled by the Feb. 10 reader feedback, “Bible, Christianity define gay as sin,” written by Ethan Tews. In my eyes, this is a prime example of the religious turmoil and lack of tolerance that is currently affecting the world as a whole.

One thing to remember when reading the Bible is that it has been copied and translated between many languages over hundreds of years by people who were intent on promoting their own religious and spiritual beliefs. The writers lived in a pre-scientific age, which treated slavery, genocide, mass murder and the oppression of women as acceptable.

The reason people, and Mr. Tews, choose to disapprove of gays and lesbians is somewhere within themselves, not because an interpretation of a biblical text says it is wrong.

Use the religious text of your choice as a means of spiritual enlightenment, not as justification to your actions or for judging your fellow man.
