LETTER: Diversity found in various social views
February 12, 2003
The Feb. 11 editorial headline “Need for diversity clear after vandalism” was hilarious. What was actually made clear was that the ISU student body is a little too diverse in terms of their willingness to treat others with respect.
To achieve the laudable goal of getting everyone to treat homosexuals with respect and dignity would result in a reduction in diversity, not an increase. If diversity were the true end, it would be preferable to have a variety of hate groups on campus, so that no ideological antithetical pair might be unrealized. But diversity is not the true end; thus to include it in the discourse of such social matters is usually simply to muddy the waters. If, instead of referring to that vague idea “diversity,” we simply explained what we really meant by it, we all would be better for it.
