The ISU men’s golf team competes in Hattiesburg, Miss., Monday at the Sam H. Hall Intercollegiate, held at the University of Southern Mississippi’s Hattiesburg Country Club.

It’s the first tournament of the spring season for the golfers.

The Cyclones start the spring season ranked 59th. Leading the way will be team scoring leaders senior Kevin Oswald and junior Jeremy Lyons.

One of the big team goals for the year is to make it to the Big 12 Championships during the last week of April in Tulsa, Okla.

“I want to go to Big 12s bad,” freshman Tyler Swanson said.

Swanson said he hopes to play better than he did in the fall season and fellow freshman Drew Dalziel just wants to have fun playing the game.

The team has practiced indoors during the offseason at the golf dome in Urbandale. They have also spent lots of time running and lifting weights in preparation for a long season that has them traveling to Texas, Florida, California and Arkansas before a possible trip to Tulsa for the Big 12 tournament and Stillwater, Okla., for the NCAA Championships.

First the team must dust off the winter cobwebs.

“I think we could be a little rusty to start off the season but lets hope not,” Dalziel said.

The Golden Eagles are fresh off a third-place finish at the Tulane Invitational at English Turn Golf Course in New Orleans, La. Last week Southern Miss shot a four day team total of 889 on their way to beating No. 19 Tennessee, No. 29 East Tennessee State and No. 35 South Carolina, according to Golfweek rankings.
