Workshops to prepare graduates for future

For graduating seniors, the next few months mean only one thing — preparing for the future.

The Student Alumni Leadership Council and the Leadership Enrichment Action Program are trying to help with a program.

Seniors looking for insight on what the real world holds for them can attend “Life 490: Succeeding Beyond a Degree.”

The event will include a keynote lecture, workshops, an etiquette luncheon and a wine and cheese reception, said Laura Bestler-Wilcox, program coordinator for the dean of students office. The deadline to register is Feb. 28.

“Along with the luncheon, there will be several educational workshops through out the day, including Business Ratings, How to Balance a Career and Family, Successful Communication and Leadership in a New Job, among others,” she said.

Beth Brei, president of the Senior Class Council, said the seminar will be beneficial to anyone looking to have questions about life after college answered.

“There are so many things to think about in the work force,” she said.

“Going to work and going to school are so very different, and it will be nice for students to have their questions answered and leave here with a better knowledge of what is out there after college.”

Bestler-Wilcox also emphasized the importance of being prepared for the future.

“We want to provide an opportunity for students to prepare for life after college and create a forum for networking and resources while holding on to connections with alumni,” she said.

Although this is the first year the seminar will be held, Bestler-Wilcox said that if it is successful, it will likely be held again in the future.

“We really hope students will take advantage of this program to get connected with society as well as remaining connected to the ISU community,” she said. “The transition [from college to the job market] will be difficult, and we want to help make it as smooth as possible.”

Brei and Bestler-Wilcox said attending the seminar will be worth students’ time and money.

“It is like a professional conference, and it will be helpful to get used to the setting and prepare for the real world,” Brei said.

“Life 490: Succeeding Beyond a Degree” will be held from 9:30 to 5:30 p.m. March 8 in the Memorial Union.

Registration is $20 for Student Alumni Association members and $25 for non-members.

The fee includes a professional leather portfolio, lunch, reception and all workshop materials. Students should register for the seminar at www.stuorg.iastate. edu/leap/Life490/index.htm or call 294-8488 by Friday.
