Copyworks reduces business hours
February 14, 2003
Copyworks, located in Campustown, has gone through several changes in recent weeks, including holding fewer business hours and the addition of selling coffee and pastries.
Ames’ Copyworks was the last of the national chain’s locations to back away from operating 24 hours a day every day of the week.
The store is now open from 7 a.m. to midnight each day.
This follows an industry-wide trend, said John Crawford, the store’s manager.
Crawford said he did not expect the change in business hours to affect business negatively.
“We decided to implement the new hours for the benefit of our customers,” he said.
He said the money saved from the costs of staff and electricity will help to lower the costs of the products and services in the store.
Crawford said competition from similar stores was not a factor in the decision to cut back on business hours, nor was a decline in business.
During the summer, the store does endure a drop in business, which Crawford said is to be expected with the decline in students living in Ames.
The convenience of having copying services available at all hours will impact customers who relied on the store during odd hours.
“It bothers me that they are not open 24 hours a day,” said Selinya Carew, junior in business.
“I had become comfortable with their flexible hours. I knew if I had a deadline to meet the next day I could take my time and know that no matter the hour, Copyworks would be open.”
Crawford said reactions like Carews’ are understandable, but he said Copyworks will continue to try to accommodate student needs.
“We are considering having longer hours the first couple of weeks of the semester,” he said.
The shortening of hours is not the only change at Copyworks.
Crawford said there will be a small-scale design art center included in the store in the near future.
Crawford said eventually, it is possible Copyworks will begin selling ISU clothing and Iowa lottery tickets.
They are also considering adding a wireless sales section to the store.
