Tennis players’ generosity supports Boys and Girls Club
February 12, 2003
The ISU women’s tennis team recently received a gift of generosity from a couple of well-known tennis players, and now they are passing that generosity on.
Two U.S. Open tickets have been donated to the ISU women’s tennis team by Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan.
The Bryan brothers are currently the third-ranked doubles team in the world.
Coach Michelle Conlon was an acquaintance with the Bryans’ father when she attended the University of Iowa, and contacted him about getting memorabilia related to the Bryans for a pro-am event.
“I asked him for an autographed picture and they sent back all of these items,” Conlon said.
“They even sent the rackets they used when they played each other in the U.S. Open, which have already been auctioned off.”
The tennis team has decided to put the tickets to good use. Raffle tickets are being sold for $10. The proceeds will go to the Boys and Girls at the Homes of Oakridge and to the Des Moines Boys and Girls Club. They will use the money to send underprivileged children to tennis camp.
The remainder of the money will be used for expenses involving the ISU tennis program.
The raffle will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the 7 Flags Racquet & Fitness Center in Des Moines, where Conlon will be hosting a tennis social. The social is open to the public.
Conlon believes this is a great way to help the youth of the state of Iowa.
“We are grateful that Bob and Mike Bryan have been so generous,” Conlon said. “This will be a great opportunity for some kids in Des Moines to get started with tennis.”
The winners of the raffle will receive two grounds passes for two days at the U.S. Open and will have the chance to eat lunch with the Bryan brothers.
The Bryan brothers will also be competing in this year’s event. Conlon also said that two other tickets have been donated to the raffle which includes tickets to a tennis tournament of choice and a lunch with the Bryans.
Tickets to the tennis social will be available for purchase until Thursday, Feb. 13. Contact Conlon in the athletic department at 294-3418 for details.
“What a great chance it will be for somebody to see the U.S. Open or one of the other tournaments and eat lunch with the Bryan brothers,” Conlon said. “It will be guaranteed fun.”
