LETTER: Waste minimization sets dining policies
February 27, 2003
This is in response to the Feb. 25 letter “Dining services not
student-friendly” by Robert Bond. I work in Dining Services and I
can understand how it seems frustrating to experience a “lack of
respect.”
I also agree with you about the whole fruit policy. It is
seemingly silly to not allow someone to have a whole apple;
however, it serves a larger purpose.
The whole purpose of cutting the fruit is to minimize waste.
(Which, believe me, tons of food is wasted in Dining Services at
every meal.) The reason it is against the rule to give one student
a whole apple is the old saying, “If you do it for one person, you
have to do it for everyone.” With the number of students coming
through the lines during a meal, it is kind of impossible to give
everyone exactly what they want.
The whole dining service experience is set up to try to make it
easier for everyone.
And next time, just ask for a whole apple when there is no
manager around; I’m betting you’ll get it.
