A bill proposed to abolish association presidents and at-large representatives to the Inter-Residence Hall failed to be seconded at the IRHA meeting Thursday.

Because the bill did not have a second author, it automatically failed.

A corresponding bill to change the organization’s bylaws to reflect the change was then ruled out of order by Vice President Jessi Raim.

Jennie Erwin, Union Drive Association president and author of the bill, said the “bills will come back every week until [I] get a chance to speak.”

Also at the meeting, President Keith Twombley said Richardson Court Association students have sent out a letter concerning the 75 freshmen to 25 upperclassmen per residence hall ratio the Department of Residence will put into effect beginning Fall 2003.

Twombley said he and Gov. Tom Vilsack were among the recipients of the letter, which stated student opposition to the new ratio.

There is a petition circulating throughout the residence halls opposing the 75/25 ratio, said Andy Tugan, Linden Hall representative.

Prior to the meeting, IRHA members presented their stance on the proposed visitation policy to Randy Alexander, director of the Department of Residence.

The members who had spoken with Alexander said at the meeting he is unwilling to negotiate on the visitation policy, which bans all members of the opposite sex from visiting residents’ rooms from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and 3 a.m. to 9 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

However, the members reported Alexander said he will work with IRHA to find more study spaces for students.

In other IRHA news, the position of secretary is still unfilled. Interested students should contact Keith Twombley at [email protected].
