Smoking cited as cause of apartment fire

The cause of a fire that swept through the NBA Keystone Apartments on Friday was the result of a man smoking in bed, Ames Fire Chief Clint Petersen said Monday.

Petersen said the fire originated in the room of Ralph “Jack” Craven, 59, on the third floor of the apartment complex, located at 3115 Roy Key Ave. Craven was the only person who perished in the blaze.

“It started in the bed area, most likely by smoking materials,” Petersen said.

Two other residents and one apartment worker were treated at Mary Greeley Medical Center.

Authorities said the fire caused more than $200,000 in damage.

In addition to the damage in Craven’s apartment, there was smoke damage to the west side of the third floor and some water damage to the first- and second-floor apartments directly under the fire.

The Lincoln Way Chapter of the American Red Cross also assisted 56 residents of the apartment, who were mostly elderly or disabled, find temporary housing on Friday night. Most have now returned to their apartments.

The building is a low-rent independent living facility managed by the National Benevolent Association of the Christian Church of St. Louis.
