Swimmers head to Kansas
February 7, 2003
The ISU swimming team is in good spirits as it prepares for Saturday’s meet at Kansas.
The event will be a difficult win for either team and the last dual meet of the season before the Big 12 championships.
“We want to win the meet at Kansas,” head coach Duane Sorenson said.
“It will be a big challenge because their team is a mirror image of our team. The meet will be a matter of who races best and has the best finishes.”
Junior Susanne Notbohm agreed.
“It’s going to be a tough meet,” said Notbohm, a butterfly swimmer.
“We will have to give all that we can.”
The Cyclones hope the momentum that helped the team to victory against Nebraska will follow them to Kansas.
“The atmosphere was good at the Nebraska meet and if we can keep it then we should do well in the Kansas meet,” Notbohm said.
Notbohm was one of several individual winners in what was almost a perfect sweep of Nebraska, winning the 200 individual medley.
Notbohm was also victorious in the 200 medley relay with teammates Kim Schmugge, Rena Kelinson and Petra Plaminkova.
Carmella Nogar had some strong wins against Nebraska as well, winning the 200 butterfly and setting a new personal best, 57.20, on the 100 butterfly.
Iowa State won all 12 individual events at the meet, as well as both relays and one of two diving events.
The final score of the meet at Beyer Hall Pool was 163-126.
“We are still really pumped up after Nebraska,” Notbohm says. “It was an awesome meet.”
Sorenson knows how critical this meet is in terms of preparation for the Big 12 championships.
“It’s the last tune-up meet for our women,” Sorenson said. “The dual meet is important, but it’s not the end of the season. Our main focus is on the NCAA championships.”
The Big 12 championships run Feb. 20-22 in Austin, Texas, and the NCAA championships will be held from March 21-23 in Auburn, Ala.
“We put a lot of hard work and effort into this season,” Notbohm said.
“And it’s going to pay off in the end.”
