LETTER: Activists inform politicians, public
February 4, 2003
his letter is concerning John Brillhart’s Feb. 3 letter, “Focusing attention will aid feminists,” suggesting that feminist organizations such as NOW and the Feminist Majority Foundation move away from “’60s-style activism” and toward providing acceptable social programs to benefit women and families.
I disagree with this suggestion. Activism serves the purpose of calling the attention of the public and of our politicians to things that need to be changed.
The real question that Mr. Brillhart’s letter brings up is “What is the limit of responsibility of our government?” If we believe, as many liberal feminist organizations do, that the government has the responsibility to institute social programs to help women and families, then their activism and involvement is the best way to alert our policy makers to the “opportunity for improvement.”
