IRHA passes bill to create Residence Hall Leadership Organization

A new organization was created by the Inter-Residence Hall Association Thursday that will take over its conference duties.

All three parts of a bill separating the duties of conferences into a distinct organization were passed with a 17-0-0 vote. The Residence Hall Leadership Organization will now be responsible for all leadership conferences available to residence hall students, formerly a duty of IRHA.

Heather Minish, former Director of Conferences for IRHA, will be the president of RHLO. Eric Peters, Willow Hall representative, will be vice president; Dave Breutzmann, Towers Residence Association president, will be treasurer; and Colleen Prosser, TRA treasurer, will serve as the fundraising director for the new organization.

Students interested in positions in RHLO should e-mail Heather Minish at [email protected].

Also at the meeting, a controversial bill calling for a change in IRHA by-laws was defeated. The bill called for all organizations seeking money from IRHA to submit requests two weeks in advance.

The bill met heavy opposition from IRHA members.

Andy Tugan, Linden Hall representative, said he had a “major objection” to the bill.

If there was an emergency where funds were needed, the bill allowed for IRHA to waive the two-week rule.

Tugan said it did not make sense to make a law just so IRHA could waive it. He said he understood the bill was written to discourage last-minute funding, but still objected.

Breutzmann said by-laws were created for what is expected to happen and what should happen. He said if an organization is being irresponsible, IRHA should not want to give them money.

Carl Carlson, director of finance, said the purpose of IRHA is to help organizations that need it. The bill seemed like an “ego trip, rather than a benefit,” Carlson said. “We are not beneath helping people.”

President Keith Twombley said he believes organizations come to IRHA late with requests for funding because they are not sure how to formally request the money.

The positions of Director of Academic Affairs and Free Friday Flicks president were filled by Carrie Ayers, freshman in pre-advertising and Reginald Lomax Jr., freshman in exercise sports science.
