Women’s hockey speeds to records in sweep
February 4, 2003
It was a record-setting weekend for the ISU women’s hockey team as they completed a weekend sweep over the St. Scholastica College Saints at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena.
Freshman center Kara Thompson had four goals to lead Iowa State to a 10-0 win on Saturday night.
Katie Dunn and Mallory Przybylski both had two goals and April Lahman and Toni Guidarelli each scored one goal.
Justine Skibbe recorded her seventh shutout of the season as the Cyclones outshot the Saints 68-7. The 68 shots equaled the saves Skibbe made in a win over Michigan earlier this season in which Iowa State won 3-2.
Thompson scored four goals again in the Sunday morning contest as the Cyclones won 8-1. Her four goals have given her a total of 33 goals on the season and make her the first person in ISU women’s hockey to score 30 or more goals in a season.
Thompson’s first goal came nine seconds into the first period, the fastest goal ever recorded in ISU women’s hockey. Thompson scored her third goal unassisted to put the Cyclones up 3-0. Dunn put Iowa State up 5-1 in the second period.
Another record broken was the fastest two goals scored in a contest when Przybylski and Lahman tallied goals eight seconds apart in the third period.
Once again Iowa State outshot St. Scholastica 48-6.
Anne Friedrichsen broke out of her scoring slump and recorded three assists.
ISU head coach Blake Marshall said Iowa State was without two regulars from the lineup which forced the Cyclones to switch things up.
“We shuffled a lot of people around this weekend, moving forwards to defense and defense to forwards. It was a good experience for our players,” Marshall said in a press release.
“We played a solid game [on Sunday], but the Saints played better today. As for Kara Thompson, she is a great skater and took some good feeds from her linemates, and we are really proud of her accomplishments.”
With the weekend sweep, the Cyclones are 11-9-1 overall. They will close out the home season this weekend against Wisconsin-LaCrosse.
Saturday’s game will be at 4:15 p.m. and Sunday’s will be at 10 a.m.
