LETTER: Zoning ordinance not clear to many

Sharon, Fern, Frank …

Get a life. I bet you guys get quite a rush policing the streets of Ames. Maybe you could even get on an episode of “COPS” someday. In regards to your letter to the editor on Feb. 18, “Students, landlords punished by zoning,” a clear ordinance, in my eyes, is one that is enforced and made aware of. Before these fines were issued, this was not the case. A clear ordinance is also one in which the enforcers, in this case City Council members, actually know all the facts about the law they have voted to enforce. After talking to a council member after these fines were issued it was obvious this was not the case. This particular member was very unclear as to what some of the basic implications of the law were.

It seems to me that if the city of Ames could find it in its heart to at least reduce the fines of these students — students who are normally law-abiding citizens and recognize that they have complied with the law — will remain in compliance with the law and will learn their lesson about ignorance of “strictly enforced” Ames ordinances.

It sickens me that the city of Ames is ripping over $30,000 from the pockets of students, the city’s own livelihood.
