LETTER: ‘Garbage’ television provides an escape

In regards to the Leslie Heuer’s commentary “Mindless reality television swarms networks,” which appeared in the Feb. 26 issue of the Daily, I would like to defend the latest craze of reality TV programming.

First of all, your title says it all. The shows are “mindless.” You can criticize television shows for being garbage and for being fake, but as far as I’m concerned, these shows are meant to be “mindless.”

I don’t think it’s a matter of settling for reality TV programs either. This programming is obviously something people enjoy watching. In a spare hour viewers can use these programs as an escape from work, studying and everyday problems. They are needed to remain sane.

Second of all, I too, have a life. Granted, one season of “Survivor” caught my attention every week until the finale, I haven’t missed one season of “The Bachelor” and I didn’t miss “The Bachelorette,” but I too, have good eyes and “a pile of New York Times bestsellers I’m slowly making my way through.”

Last of all, I can totally see your point when it was mentioned that Trista (from “The Bachelorette”) had to choose one man to “fall in love with” out of only 12. What are the chances of finding everlasting love in that? But let me point out that she had 25 men, not 12, which drastically improves her odds, don’t you think?
