LETTER: Students gouged by ISU parking costs
February 10, 2003
It is of special concern to me as to the parking situation on campus. I understand that parking concerns are always difficult problems and Iowa State is no different. However, Iowa State University seems to relish in creating a bigger problem than they have to.
When I come to campus at night, parking is very sparse at legal parking spots. However, there are numerous spots that are posted “Permit Required: All Hours All Days.” Yet there are almost never vehicles at these spots. And furthermore the university has intermixed legal spots with the permit required spots along the road by Beardshear.
It is my position that the university has done this in order to force illegal parking and thus gain revenue through ticketing.
Apart from the Permit Required spaces, the university also gives an inordinate number of spaces up to construction parking. Again these are parking spaces that cannot be used at any time.
The university will give the position to use Cy-Ride. So then the time constraints on a student are taxed even more.
Next they will say, why not park at the Memorial Union? What about those students who are extremely low on money? If they spend $1 per night at the parking ramp on every weekday, that would be an extra $25 per month.
Iowa State needs to provide better service to its students and eliminate some of their gouging practices.
