Athletic courts to enhance Frederiksen

Frederiksen will be adding more courts to its name.

Construction is underway for a future basketball court and sand volleyball court, said Linda Shaw, president of Frederiksen Court Community Center. The courts will be located in the large, grassy area east of the community center.

The construction is being funded by the Department of Residence and not the student council, said Mary Beth Golemo, program coordinator for residence halls.

The asphalt for the basketball court and the sand for the volleyball court are already in place, Catherine Brown, program coordinator for facilities and planning management, said.

“[We are] in the process of acquiring equipment,” Brown said.

She said the lines will be painted on the basketball court in late spring, when temperatures are continuously warm. The basketball court will be a full-sized court, but the number of basketball hoops has not been decided yet, Brown said.

“The work being done is exciting,” said Golemo.

The building of the new courts is not a new idea, Shaw said. When Frederiksen was first developed, an outdoor recreation area was placed in the plan. Due to unexpected construction projects, resources to build the courts were not available until now, Shaw said.

“I’m anxious to play sand volleyball,” Shaw said.

Abigail Farland, senior in psychology and a resident of Frederiksen court said she had not heard any negative comments about the courts from residents.

“[They] are a great idea and I am planning to use them,” she said. “[The courts] are money well spent.”
