Cyclones topple No. 3 Wildcats
January 30, 2003
Hilton Magic was in full effect for the ISU women’s basketball team on Wednesday night, helping carry the team to a 74-69 upset win over No. 3 Kansas State.
A crowd of 11,109 exploded during several key plays, energizing the Cyclones whenever Kansas State seemed to be pulling close.
Senior Lindsey Wilson led Iowa State with 27 points, including 15 in the first half. But the biggest factor for the Cyclones was the offensive support Wilson got from her teammates.
Sophomore Anne O’Neil led three other Cyclones with 18 points. Sophomore Lisa Kreiner added 14 points, including several key baskets in the post down the stretch.
Senior Mary Cofield was the final Cyclone in double digits with 12 points, going 4-5 from three-point range. She credits the play of her guards for getting her good looks.
“These guys are driving and kicking and getting us wide open shots,” she said. “[It’s] that feeling like everybody’s into it.”
Iowa State head coach Bill Fennelly was very happy to see his players looking for their own shots.
“I don’t know that we’ve had a game all year with four players in double figures,” he said. “The other kids were willing to step up and take [shots]. Tonight we knocked a few down and that’s what you need to do.”
The Wildcats were led by sophomore Megan Mahoney, who scored a career-high 22 points, and junior Nicole Ohlde’s 21. Their offense was not quite as effective for much of the game due to leading scorer Kendra Wecker sitting out much of the game due to foul trouble. Wecker scored just 10 points, 10 below her season average.
Kansas State head coach Deb Patterson commended the Cyclones on their determination all over the court.
“Iowa State came out and did a very nice job defensively,” she said. “[They were] a team that was very aggressive. We played with a lot of fear.”
Wilson made several free throws in the game’s final four minutes to seal the win.
“In those kinds of situations, you got to want the ball,” Wilson said.
Patterson was impressed with the performance by Wilson, and her teammates.
“[We saw] fantastic play individually by Lindsey Wilson,” she said. “She did her part, and so did her teammates. It was a great game by Iowa State.”
The victory matched the Cyclones’ win over their highest-ranked opponent. Last season they defeated then-No. 3 Oklahoma, 82-66, at Hilton Coliseum.
The Cyclones will hit the road to face Baylor this Saturday.
