UPDATE: Student remains in stable condition

The ISU freshman who leaped off the Memorial Union parking ramp shortly after midnight on Jan. 1 remains hospitalized but is improving at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.

Daphene McGlothin, patient care coordinator for the hospital, said the student is in stable condition.

The student’s father said his son has been making remarkable progress.

“He’s doing a lot better,” he said. “He’s out of intensive care. It’s going to be a long, slow grind while his bones heal up, but [doctors] expect a full recovery.”

The student’s father said his son is keeping busy on his computer while staying in the hospital. “Amazingly enough, he doesn’t seem to have any brain damage — he can actually think,” he said.

The student’s name has been released, but the Daily has chosen not to print it.
