LETTER: Raise comes at the expense of others
January 16, 2003
Like it or not, our universities are involved in a sort of arms race when it comes to coaching salaries. What really gets me is that athletic departments jack up their men’s football and basketball spending, and then find they have less money to spend on other collegiate sports. So they cut some men’s sports like swimming, wrestling and baseball and claim Title IX made them do it.
Nobody wants to blame football and men’s basketball spending — it’s always those pesky women.
It would also be interesting to see if the escalating cost of college sports has anything to do with your next cable bill increase.
