LETTER: Coach Mac takes football to new level
January 23, 2003
As an alumnus of Iowa State and a former football player there, I couldn’t disagree more with Nicole Woodroffe’s letter to the editor, “Players brought fans, not coaches,” that ran in the Daily on Jan. 21.
She said, “Who or what brought fans to the games and caused people to buy football apparel?” Then she said that it wasn’t Coach Mac, but the players. I will partially agree with her here, but that is where it stops.
Sure, people came to watch the players, but they also came because the team is good. When we had another Heisman candidate, Troy Davis, the fans didn’t come.
Therefore, the reason fans come is because Coach Mac has made his football program a winner.
Woodroffe then complains about play calling, but I bet she didn’t realize it was Coach Brickey’s first year as offensive coordinator at Iowa State. Considering the defenses Iowa State was up against this year, he did a pretty good job.
She also blames the coaches in the letter for the lack of scoring in the red zone, but the coaches are not out there playing.
It is up to the players to make up their mind that they aren’t going to be denied the score, and that didn’t happen.
The option play against Florida State University was a great call, and here’s why: Your best offensive player is Seneca, and the option gives him a chance to use his abilities.
As for thoughts that Coach Ferentz is a better coach than Coach Mac, is she serious? Coach Mac came to Iowa State with pretty much no Division I athletes on the team. He had to build the program from scratch. I’d say he has done a pretty good job in a reasonable amount of time. Yes, Ferentz went 11-2, but realize how mediocre the Big 10 was this year. Iowa got lucky by not playing Ohio State.
If Ferentz is such a good coach why hasn’t he beaten Coach Mac yet?
Ferentz didn’t have to start from ground zero like Mac did.
Regarding the players who were ineligible for the bowl game, they put themselves in that situation.
There are plenty of academic resources available; they chose not to utilize them.
So Nicole, before you complain about something you evidently have no idea about, check some facts.
Then, transfer to Iowa since you’re such a Ferentz fan.
