IRHA members are expected to speak out against visitation policy

Several members of the Inter-Residence Hall Association are planning to voice disapproval of the Department of Residence’s new visitation policy at Thursday’s meeting.

The new visitation policy proposed by the Department of Residence would restrict co-ed visitation after 1 a.m. in Fresh Start Residence Halls, which includes Maple, Friley, Helser and Eaton Halls.

The main purpose of the opposition bill is to “show the new policy is not in the best interest socially and academically [of students],” said Jennie Erwin, Union Drive Association president.

Erwin said students have voiced opposition to the new policy proposed by the Department of Residence, calling it too strict.

Erwin said she does not foresee a lot of controversy from representatives and believes the current “no co-habitation” policy covers the issues better than the proposed new visitation policy.

If the bill is passed, it will send a message to the administration, Erwin said.

The bill will be discussed if there is not a motion for adjournment.

Other proposals for terms and conditions will be introduced by Department of Residence Director Randy Alexander.

The new dining service meal plans will also be discussed by Jon Lewis, director of campus dining.

In other business, a bill to allocate $1,635 to the Multicultural Leadership Summit will be introduced.

The summit will be held on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church and Student Center, 2210 Lincoln Way.

The support of the Multicultural Leadership Summit is important because a “big part of IRHA is to provide a lot of opportunity to get students involved,” said Colleen Prosser, Towers Residence Association treasurer.

Another bill up for debate calls for the allocation of $700 to the Global Leadership Seminar. The Global Leadership Seminar is new to Iowa State and teaches students leadership skills, said Andrew Tugan, Linden Hall representative.

A nomination to fill the position of Director of Information Technology will also be discussed. Brad Holcomb, sophomore in computer engineering, has been nominated to fill the position.

Plans are already in place for the information technology director when the position is filled, said IRHA President Keith Twombley.

IRHA meetings are open to the public, and Thursday’s IRHA meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in the Campanile Room of the Memorial Union.
