Gymnasts win first home meet against Spartans

After coming off a disappointing loss at Missouri on Jan. 12, the ISU gymnastics team bounced back and got a win in their first home meet Friday night against Michigan State, 196.000-193.325.

With the win, Iowa State improves to 1-1 and Michigan State falls to 0-2.

Head coach K.J. Kindler said the Cyclones worked hard all week to clean up their routines after falls and other mistakes cost them at Missouri.

“I’m just kind of taken aback. They did a really good job,” Kindler said.

“I was expecting an improvement, but I am ecstatic with their performance. It’s more than an improvement; it’s an end-of-the-year performance. I’m very excited about it.”

While the uneven bars gave the Cyclones fits against Missouri, it was the same event in which Iowa State improved the most Friday night.

“I thought floor was good, beam was good,” Kinder said. “Bars was 500 percent better than last week.”

Competing for only the second time in her collegiate career as an all-arounder, freshman Erin Dethloff won the all-around competition with a score of 39.4.

Dethloff also took first place in three of the four events.

She earned career highs on both the uneven bars and floor with a 9.9 and on the balance beam with a 9.85.

Her all-around score was the highest ever for a Cyclone freshman, but Dethloff isn’t too concerned about records.

“I don’t think about setting records,” she said. “I just think about what I need to do and going out and having fun.”

Kindler was very happy about her performance.

“What a great performance for a freshman. A 49.4 — that’s awesome,” Kindler said.

“She was aggressive, a go-getter out there. She didn’t hedge on beam when there was a mistake ahead of her. She is the anchor on floor and bars and she just nailed her routine.”

Along with Dethloff, three other Cyclone gymnasts earned career high scores.

On the bars, junior Gabby Layne received a 9.85 and freshman Krystal Carney earned a 9.9 on the floor.

Freshman Laura-Kay Powell set career marks on the beam and floor, receiving a score of 9.85 on each.

With such high marks, the Cyclones were able to take first place in each event.

Sophomore Susan Stock won the vault with a 9.8 and Dethloff took the bars with a 9.9.

Carney and Dethloff tied on the floor with a score of 9.9.

Dethloff, Powell and junior Chee Chee Calina were in a four-way tie with Michigan State’s Sarah Alexander on the beam with 9.85.

Iowa State’s next meet is Saturday at Denver, where they will compete against the Denver Pioneers and the Penn State Nittany Lions.
