Council will review liquor ban
January 28, 2003
At its meeting Tuesday, the Ames City Council will vote for the second time on a proposed ordinance that would prohibit “liquor buffets,” advancing the item to a third and final read in February.
Two weeks ago the council approved the first passage of an ordinance that would prohibit serving unlimited quantities of alcohol at local bars. In order for a proposed ordinance to go into effect, it must pass three times.
Council member Sharon Wirth said she believes the drink ordinance will pass.
“There’s strong support from the City Council for [the unlimited drinking ordinance]. We’re concerned about excessive alcohol abuse, and we hope the new ordinance will curb the problem,” she said.
However, Wirth said she believes the ordinance needs some fine tuning. Ames city lawyers expressed concern that it wasn’t written quite right, she said.
John Klaus, city attorney, said the ordinance may need revision because it’s prohibition of drink specials isn’t extensive enough.
“I’ve received calls from members of the university who want more types of drink specials prohibited,” he said.
Prior to the council meeting, the Ames Housing Governing Board, a newly formed committee, will meet at 6 p.m. The board is required for all cities having 50,000 or more citizens.
“Before the creation of this board, the responsibilities of housing were delegated to different departments,” Wirth said.
“Now they’re consolidated into one committee.”
The council will also proclaim recognition of “World’s Largest Cereal Treat” Day on Feb. 7.
This day will commemorate a Veishea committee that built a 2,500-pound Kellogg’s Rice Krispie treat, which was declared the world’s largest by the Guinness Book of World Records.
All are invited to attend the council meeting, which begins at 6:30 p.m. It is located in the City Council Chambers at 515 Clark St.
