LETTER: Abortion issue a matter of poverty
January 31, 2003
Leslie Heuer, in response to your Jan. 29 column “Pro-life advocates ambush women’s rights,” we are neither gray-haired, old nor male and we still believe abortion is morally wrong. Trying to frame the abortion issue as one of female oppression ignores the issues that force women to consider abortions in the first place.
Instead of claiming that a repeal of Roe v. Wade will fill jail cells with women, why don’t you look at the real prisons of poverty and ignorance?
And as you said, “Saying no is important. But what fun is that?” Unfortunately, Leslie, there is an “element of personal responsibility that we’re trying to ignore.”
Everyone, both men and women, should be prepared to accept the consequences of their actions.
