LETTER:Band comments harm reputation
December 4, 2002
A band is supposed to play music, nothing else.
It doesn’t tell players that their “socks are untied” or mock the opposing coach by telling everyone that his left foot hits the ground, now his right foot, now his left foot. We don’t care, band! Stick to playing music.
This is my fifth season watching ISU basketball and not once have I heard a student join in any of the pep band’s ridiculous sayings. I have heard plenty of students wish that they would be quiet, though. If you want to help get the crowd fired up, fine. But you are not going to get it done by telling a player, “You’re shooting for a date with (Insert band member name).”
Do it instead by playing the fight song or some other lively music. The students want ISU’s image to be one of a fighting spirit, not some dumb sayings. Keep you mouths shut unless you are playing your instrument.
