Date set for first reading of couch ordinance bill
December 11, 2002
Ames’ possible couch ordinance is now a future agenda item.
At its Tuesday meeting, the Ames City Council passed a motion to move the first reading of a bill to the Jan. 14 meeting, when students have returned from winter break.
If passed, the couch ordinance would prohibit rental property residents from having indoor furniture on porches and in yards.
Also at Tuesday’s meeting, eight businesses were granted liquor license or beer permit renewals.
Mayor Ted Tedesco said it was good to see so many establishments in the Ames area without alcohol violations over the last year. All eight were free of violations.
A motion was approved for a new Class C Liquor License for The Cafe, 2616 Northridge Parkway.
A motion was passed on the final resolution of necessity for the SE 2nd Street Paving Program. The project encompasses Sumner Avenue to Kingsbury Avenue and Kingsbury Avenue from South East 2nd Street to Lincoln Way.
There was debate among two Story County residents about whether the street should be paved over or left gravel.
Clarence Martin, of 218 7th St., said he would like to see the road paved. “It’s been in process for 18 months,” Martin said. “I feel it’s a good project for Ames and the local community.”
Martin said Santa Claus isn’t going to come and pave the road.
“I realize it’s expensive, but there is much support for it,” Martin said. “I think it will be good for my property and other people’s property.”
Gladys Peter, of 519 Marvick Ave., Story City, said she would like to see the road left alone.
Peter told the council that a college student renting property from her said the gravel road reminded her of the small town she came from.
Three resolutions under planning and housing were delayed until the Jan. 14 meeting.
