Kinky Boots doles out lessons in heels
February 1, 2019
Kinky Boot, the 25th longest running Broadway show, ran its last tour through Stephens Auditorium on Thursday night, and it taught lessons while strutting in high heels.
The show opens with the the beginning of Charlie Price’s story, he leaves his home for the big city and a new job. He is quickly called back home when his father’s death puts the future of the family shoe making business at risk.
Price soon meets Lola, an entertainer with a style all her own. Together they come up with a brand new idea that they hope will save the factory. Along the way they are taught lessons and dish some out as well in acceptance, forgiveness and how to be true to who you are.
Kinky Boots is, however, a musical, and it did not disappoint to throw the audience into the brightly colored world of Lola with songs such as “Land of Lola” and “Sex is in the Heel.” The audience was treated to heartfelt numbers such as “Not My Father’s Son” and “Soul of a Man.”
The side characters were not left out of the fun either. The audience fell in love with the quirky workers of the shoe factory. Their internal and external struggles moved the plot a lot by adding depth and a deeper sense of meaning to the events and setting.
Songs like “The History of Wrong Guys” and “What a Woman Wants” show the audience the upsides and downsides to the characters other than the mains.
“Kinky Boots” delivers not only music that will keep you humming for the next week, but it also lessons that cover all of those bases. Lola shows the audience it is OK to be different. Charlie Price shows the audience it’s alright to be wrong and to not know what you are doing. The side character Don shows us accepting people is better than hurting them.
You can unpack a lot from the story based off true events. While its doors will be closing this coming April, “Kinky Boots” will remain in the heart and minds of the audience’s who sat through a world of lessons and cherry red heels.
