The student behind Cyclone artwork

Graduate student Mike Ludwig summed up the loyal Cyclone fans image in a picture worth a thousand words.

Ludwig designed “The House that Jack Trice Built,” a poster representing the 2002 Cyclone football season.

He also illustrated the home game programs this season.

Last year he created “Cyclone Resurgence,” a black-and-white picture dedicated to the 2001 season. He then sold it through the Alumni Association.

The poster is a collage that portrays a packed Jack Trice Stadium in the background with two enlarged fans dressed in Cyclone jerseys.

The Cy-Hawk trophy, which is awarded to the winner of the Iowa and ISU football game, floats in the crowd and the bottom portion shows the Cyclones in action with a referee signaling a touchdown blended into a celebrating moment.

Ludwig said he gets his ideas for the sports posters from pictures taken by Gary Clark. Using those pictures, Ludwig composes a collage illustrating his views.

The pictures are watercolor drawings that are touched up using a computer program. “The House that Jack Trice Built” took five months to complete.

“It’s supposed to be a timeless drawing that honors Iowa State football in general,” Ludwig said.

The picture will be for sale at Ludwig’s Web site, www.illpipe.com. Some of his other pieces from his undergraduate work and last year’s “Cyclone Resurgence” poster are also on the site.

Ludwig has kept his Cyclone tradition strong through both good times and bad. He said he hopes people realize that Iowa State played one of the toughest schedules in the history of the program this year.

“I want to let everyone know that this is our team, and even though things have gotten shaky toward the end of the season, we need to get together and support them,” Ludwig said.
