LETTER:Mural’s humor funny, not offensive
December 9, 2002
I completely disagree with the girls protesting the mural in Willow Hall. I had no idea that the mural existed before I read the Dec. 5 Daily article “Students want Willow mural to be removed.”
In fact, when I saw the picture it made me laugh.
It seems to be something typical that a person would find on a college campus. I am not talking about the messages suggesting date rape, which are never acceptable. I just thought it was humorous.
I do have a question for the eight girls calling for the mural to be taken down, though. If you weren’t asked to participate in activism for a class project, would you have raised such a commotion about the mural, or was it just an easy out for the project?
I do agree that the messages of date rape that were added later are inappropriate and should be removed, but what is actually so offensive about the mural?
Is it the scantily clad woman? If that is what the problem is then you had better stay inside come spring because girls wearing less than that are laying all over campus soaking up the sun.
All activism seems to be placed into categories defined by society. Feminist, racist, chauvinist and many other “ist” categories exist, but all seem to fall short of the one important category: The humanist category. Everyone seems to get caught up in changing the gender- or race- specific categories. This has been going on for decades, and all that is actually happening is that we are all running in place.
Maybe it is time for the new humanist angle. Do some good, help a person, a human, instead of wasting time worrying about things that have as much significance as whether the toilet seat is left up or down. So leave the mural alone — it is trivial.
