Fashion trends change as winter approaches
December 2, 2002
As college students begin to put their holiday wish lists together and begin shopping for the perfect holiday gift for friends and family, the latest fashion staples are often on the minds of all college students.
Just in time for the holiday season, winter trends have been spotted throughout North Grand Mall.
“Express is going towards more camels and creams for the holiday season,” Akylah Johnson, Express Store co-manager said.
Karissa Eldridge, assistant manager at the Buckle, agreed. “Browns and tans are in this year for sure.”
Along with basic staple colors such as black and camel, accent colors will also be crucial to pulling the trendy look together.
Johnson said there are lots of red items this season that are “more for parties and going out to the clubs.”
Men’s fashion will also be livelier this winter with pastel undershirts complementing the traditional dark blues and grays seen in men’s fashion.
“It’s about a bigger array of colors,” Johnson said. “You may see a blue-striped shirt with a black-striped tie.”
Men’s jeans have changed slightly, heading towards more of a boot cut style with a small amount of flare, Johnson said. “They have a more worn look to them.”
Gap sales associate Erin Hansen said classic pieces are still the top sellers at the Gap.
“Big sellers are boot cut jeans, peacoats and anything fleece, especially being in a college town,” Hansen said.
“We always sell out of our ribbed turtlenecks.”
But, if shoppers are looking for something a little bit trendier, there are plenty of options.
Johnson said lace, velvet and sheer will all be crucial in pulling off the season’s latest looks.
“If it’s not sheer, it’s usually velvet in terms of going out,” Johnson said.
The hottest new trend being spotted at several stores at North Grand Mall is the arrival of the velvet jumpsuit.
“Velour jumpsuits with a hoodie and pants are selling,” Hansen said.
Johnson said the velvet jumpsuits have been a huge success at Express as well.
“I sell at least five a day,” she said. “It’s comfortable, yet stylish.”
In terms of accessories, many of the fall trends will be carried over to the winter season, with minor adjustments.
Johnson said turquoise and brown jewelry will continue to be hot and silver accessories are still selling.
However, gold will not be making a major comeback. “Gold hasn’t been a hot seller for a while,” Johnson said.
Eldridge said the Buckle is also excited about the new winter accessories from the Lucky brand.
“I’ve seen the scarves and they’re very cool,” Eldridge said.
Johnson said suede hats, vests and purses will allow for more individual styling. She said belts will also accentuate more personal style as well.
“Fringe is still in, but it’s more about the design of the belt and how it hangs on your hips,” Johnson said. “The more different, the better.”
