‘Brigadoon’ will show at Veishea
December 13, 2002
Actors and actresses wishing to audition for Stars Over Veishea’s musical, “Brigadoon,” should start practicing over winter break. Auditions will be held immediately when second semester begins.
Jess Phelps, producer of “Brigadoon,” said auditions are scheduled for January 13, 14 and 15.
Those interested in auditioning should just show up at the South Ball Room of the Memorial Union on January 13 and the Gallery Room of the Memorial Union on January 14 and 15, Phelps said, from 7 to 10 p.m.
Hannah Dobbs, Veishea public relations co-chair, said “Brigadoon” will be directed by Terence Goodman, a new director to Iowa State Theater.
“[Goodman] wants to take SOV to new heights and he’s really into it,” Dobbs said.
Goodman said Brigadoon is an excellent musical selection for SOV’s production.
“It fits into the criteria for SOV in that it needs to appeal to a wide audience. It’s a family event,” he said.
He said “Brigadoon” is a personal favorite of his and he has performed it several times as a professional actor.
Goodman said the message of “Brigadoon” is “love conquers all.”
“I think this is a message that we all need to hear a little bit more about after [Sept. 11],” he said.
Goodman said they will be cutting “Brigadoon” from its original three hours to just over two hours for the Stars Over Veishea production.
“It is originally from 1939 and we’re going to be updating the material to today’s standards,” he said.
Goodman said Brigadoon was last used as an SOV production in 1984. He said the show will be a joint effort from several Iowa State departments.
“This is a real opportunity for music, theater and dance to really put their best foot forward,” he said.
